Esta foto fue tomada en 1986, y lo que ves es lo que hay. La sesión fue bastante natural: le pedí a mi novia que hiciera alguna pose ocasional, pero no la dirigí especialmente. No suelo tener sentimientos ni pensamientos mientras trabajo: Me sumerjo completamente en el mundo visual del sujeto.
Tomé dos rollos de película en menos de una hora, y luego pasé tres horas imprimiendo las fotografías. A partir de ellas, hice un diseño de ocho páginas para una revista de fotografía, colocando arbitrariamente las imágenes en posición vertical y horizontal.
Ese mismo año realicé otra toma, que titulé Cómo crear una bella imagen 3: Azulejos de Aizuwakamatsu. Es una imagen de la esquina de un cuarto de baño, también muy recortada, y el patrón hexagonal, tipo colmena, de los azulejos es una pista para entender la serie de las mallas. Al igual que los azulejos, el cuerpo está confinado, pero quizá no de forma tan violenta como en algunas de mis obras anteriores. Las piernas aquí pueden moverse -casi se puede sentir que están a punto de hacerlo- y por eso son tan eróticas. Las pantorrillas presionan contra la superficie geométrica casi hasta el punto de reventar, pero la tensión está equilibrada, lo que hace que las piernas sean muy poderosas.
Ser fotógrafo es una batalla constante con innumerables fragmentos; la cámara me permite acercarme a un sujeto y captar sus detalles. El mundo parece muy erótico a mis ojos. Las mallas son sólo un ejemplo.
This picture was taken in 1986, and what you see is what you get. The shoot was quite natural: I asked my girlfriend to make an occasional pose, but didn't particularly direct her. I tend not to have feelings or thoughts while I work: I am completely immersed in the visual world of the subject.
I took two rolls of film in under an hour, then spent three hours printing the photographs. From those, I came up with an eight-page layout for a photography magazine, arbitrarily placing the images in vertical and horizontal positions.
I took another shot the same year, which I called How to Create a Beautiful Picture 3: Tiles of Aizuwakamatsu. It's an image of the corner of a bathroom, also closely cropped, and the hexagonal, beehive-like pattern of the tiles is a clue to understanding the tights series. Like the tiles, the body is confined, but perhaps not as violently as in some of my earlier works. The legs here can move – you can almost feel them about to – which is why they are so erotic. The calves press against the geometrical surface almost to the point of bursting, but the tension is balanced, making the legs very powerful.
Being a photographer is a constant battle with countless fragments; the camera allows me to get closer to a subject and capture its detail. The world appears very erotic in my eyes. Tights are only one example.
