Colm Tóibín: "Su alcance era extraordinario
Había algo ilimitado en el proceso imaginativo de Hilary Mantel. Veía las fuerzas históricas operando con inmensa claridad, pero también podía crear con verdadera habilidad y destreza el momento íntimo, la pequeña escena, el repentino cambio de luz o de poder en una relación. Su repertorio era extraordinario, desde sus primeros relatos semiautobiográficos hasta sus últimas novelas magistrales. Lo impresionante no era sólo la amplitud de su investigación histórica, sino cómo podía crear una escena como por arte de magia. Su toque era ligero. De todas sus novelas, me encantó "El gigante O'Brien", sus frases sugerentes, sus diálogos como un coro o un comentario sobre la vida y sus dificultades. A finales de junio, cuando hice un Zoom con ella para el 92nd Street Y, estaba emocionada ante la perspectiva de mudarse a Irlanda y habló de la casa que había comprado en Kinsale. Es una inmensa tristeza que esto ya no vaya a suceder.

Colm Tóibín: ‘Her range was extraordinary’
There was something boundless about Hilary Mantel’s imaginative process. She saw historical forces operating with immense clarity, but she also could create with real skill and flair the intimate moment, the tiny scene, the sudden shift of light or of power in a relationship. Her range was extraordinary, from early semi-autobiographical stories to the late magisterial novels. It wasn’t merely the breadth of her historical research that was impressive, it was how she could create a scene as if by magic. There was lightness in her touch. Of all her novels, I loved ‘The Giant O’Brien’, the darting, suggestive sentences, the dialogue like a chorus, or a commentary on life and its hardships. At the end of June, when I did a Zoom with her for the 92nd Street Y, she was filled with excitement at the prospect of moving to Ireland and spoke of the house she had bought in Kinsale. It is immensely sad that this now won’t happen.
